Millie, the Lucky Labrador. Millie came to Three Counties, via a third party, after being picked up roaming in a park. On the day that she arrived at Three Counties kennels her new Mum and Dad, Jackie and Tony, turned up to find a new companion for Glen who had just lost his long-time ‘brother’ Skipper. For Millie and Glen it was love at first sight. So Glen had made his choice and subject to a routine home visit and 2 week trial Millie had found her new home. Unfortunately Millie had not been looked after and had very bad teeth; some where holes were clearly visible. A trip to the vet meant that 13 had to be removed with a very groggy and sad looking Labrador lying in the car on the way home. This was not the end of Millie’s problems. She soon came into season continuing into a 15th day. Mum Jackie thought this to be odd and Millie made another visit to the vet where it was quickly discovered she had severe cysting on her ovary and needed an emergency operation. If this had not been done Millie would have died in days. Millie needed nursing which included Mum and Dad sleeping in the lounge for 5 days as the poor dog could not make the stairs without bursting her stitches! Having made a full recovery, Millie soon became an energetic member of the family living alongside Glen. A few months later a "foster" dog Jess joined the family and was adopted by a new family in the spring of 2007. Following this Jackie and Tony decided they liked having 3 dogs. Remembering the sad plight of Benji, now called Bungo, they checked Millie and Glen liked him and now they are a family with 3 adopted dogs. Millie’s story could easily have had a much different ending but being in a caring home made sure her potentially life-ending condition was quickly noticed and action taken to rectify this condition. Unfortunately this level of one to one attention cannot be given to all dogs in care, as hours are not limitless. If the reader of this is able and wants to offer a home to a dog to give them the best chance in life please contact Gyll on 01778 440318 or 07708 589792.
If you feel you want to help but are unable to commit to a full adoption we are always looking for foster carers. Jackie and Tony found this equally rewarding. All we ask of fosterers is that they feed give time and love to the animal. Three Counties will cover any vet bills, if required, while the dog is in your care. Jackie and Tony Allen |
